The Library Foundation of Hillsboro

Fall 2024 Quilt Raffle

“Bundle Up with Books”

The Library Foundation of Hillsboro is thrilled to present a book-themed Quilt Raffle!

Completed Quilt

In the months of October and November, look for a special quilt hanging in the libraries – one month in each location – to be raffled off by the Library Foundation of Hillsboro. The proceeds from this “Book Quilt” will used to support the Foundation’s Generous Words program. Books purchased through the Generous Words campaign are shared for free at library outreach events, library programs, and the Tiny Branches.

The Bundle up with Books quilt was created by Board Member, Amy Sherwood, and her mother, Kris Kellor. Together, they took on this project to raise funds for their community. Read below why this project has been so special to Amy!

Books!  I would love for all children to have a collection of books at home, as well as access to resources at their local library. As a child, I loved to read, so I was a frequent visitor to the Childrens’ Room at the public library in my hometown. Even with limited resources, I was able to collect a few of my own books for reading at home. I treasured these books.

I joined the Library Foundation of Hillsboro Board after retiring in 2023.  My focus as a  Board member is access to reading materials for all.

Giving back to my community and spending more time with my family – in particular with my parents and grandkids who all live in Hillsboro – are important to me in terms of where to put time and energy in retirement. Making this quilt with my mom for the Hillsboro Library Foundation’s Generous Words program allows me to help the community while spending time with my mom, and learning from her!

This quilt is the first quilt I’ve made with my mom. She has been teaching me to quilt, all the while knowing our work will be going to a wonderful cause. It is remarkable how the community pitched in to help, too. For example, we received a few squares of fabric from my neighbor to fill in some color gaps, and we were given a donation of time and resources by another individual to embroider the ‘Generous Words’ logo on the quilt.  I hope there is a lot of community interest in the quilt and the raffle, so we can raise money to continue to expand ‘Generous Words’ in 2025!
