Each year the Library Foundation of Hillsboro hosts an author talk, inviting nationally and internationally renown writers to Hillsboro. It is an opportunity for our community to learn about the writers’ creative process, how they developed their love of writing, often some intriguing – and funny – personal and professional stories.
This year’s author was Jeff VanderMeer, a New York Times best selling author and recent transplant to Portland. In the context of his recent move, it was especially enjoyable to hear him talk about his passion for the environment along with his growing love of the Pacific Northwest.
He noted that his upbringing in the Fiji Islands, then moving to New York and Florida, provided the inspiration for his Southern Reach series. His book Annihilation was adapted into a film staring Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and others.
VanderMeer writes across genres – his work is sometimes considered eco-fiction, sci-fi, environmental fantasy, or post-apocalyptic fiction. Subsequent to the Foundation having invited N.K. Jemisin to speak a couple of years back, VanderMeer’s talk gave us another fascinating view into speculative fiction.
We love seeing our audience engaged with the author and this year’s event did not disappoint. We sold out of his books at the event and the audience had a chance to have their copy signed at the end of the evening. If you have not read his works, check out his books at our library!
