The Children’s Area at the Brookwood Library will be renamed in honor of Hillsboro’s former Mayor, Steve Callaway. Callaway, previously a principal and teacher in the Hillsboro School District, as well as long-time city volunteer and Library Foundation board member, served as the City’s Mayor from 2016-2024.
Gail Madsen, long time Library Foundation board member who served with Callaway, said, “Steve has an innate ability to connect with all kinds of people, and leads through listening. We will always remember his love of people, and as a former teacher, especially of children.”
Callaway himself is thrilled to be honored in this way. He shared that, “One of my favorite things to do during my time as Mayor was to visit schools, classrooms, assemblies, and entire grades. I read dozens of books to thousands of students at public schools, private schools, summer school, online school, and even home schools. All of this is why this honor is so important to me.”
The brightly colored, spacious children’s area at Brookwood Library holds more than 41,000 items, including picture books, Vox books, board books, toys, a coloring station, and seasonal displays. In this space, materials for babies, toddlers, and early elementary children are available in 18 languages.
Make a donation to the Library Foundation of Hillsboro and you can add a children’s book ($5), 10 children’s books ($50), or even more to the collections at both Brookwood and Shute Park libraries.
