Some of the Hillsboro Library’s fastest circulating Young Adult and Juvenile books are graphic novels and manga. Our libraries have responded accordingly with extensive collections in these two genres. Most every day, a person spending time near those collections can hear excited exclamations from young patrons or see young people requesting, reading, and checking these books out.
Having recently received a very generous anonymous donation with the request that the funds be used to enhance the Young Adult section of the library, the Library Foundation is using this donation to pay for the Library’s rollout of YA Graphic Novel and Manga kits!
Why kits? Well, many manga books and graphic novels are written in series, and oftentimes readers prefer to binge through a fast-paced series rather than trying to piece together the books, each of which may or may not be checked out when the reader comes to find it. So, by creating series kits, the reading experience for our young readers is much more pleasant and accessible!
When I mentioned this initiative to a few young people as they were checking out manga, their eyes lit up, and their teen enthusiasm was channeled into a “that’s cool!”
Thanks to our generous donors, the Library Foundation of Hillsboro continues to add even more quality and access to its already exceptional services.
